Robert Hugill and the Burgundian Cadence
A new setting of the Passion by Robert Hugill will receive a tour of
seven performances in March 1999. Hugill, sponsored by Associated Medibase for
the third year running, has been influenced by the repertory of the virtuoso
a capella ensemble The Burgundian Cadence, who will give the performances. It specialises in music of the 14th and 15th centuries.
The tour starts on 9 March at 8 in the British Music Information Centre,
St Mary Abbots, Kensington (11 March, 7.30), St James, Piccadilly
(12 March, 1.00), Westminster Abbey (21 March, 5.45), Southwark Cathedral
(23 March, 1.00), Lincoln Cathedral (26 March, 1.00), plus an educational
lecture-recital at Kingston Grammar School.
Robert Hugill has selected a text from St Lukes Gospel and poems
by the American poet, Carl Cook. It is set for an ensemble of counter-tenor,
two tenors and baritone. In contrast to tradition, the part of Christ is
sung by the counter-tenor, giving an other-worldly feel to his dialogue.
