De Vlaamse Opera also offers a chance to catch some leading continental voices not always heard in the UK; several of the most impressive are from Belgium itself, and a number of Scandinavian singers (including Stabell and Stemme) have made their mark in Flanders. So too have some of the finest English voices - Christopher Ventris's impassioned, jealous Erik - one of the most impressive performances in last season's Flying Dutchman - for example, and perhaps most notably Anthony Rolfe Johnson in the title role of Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex, which also featured Knut Skram as Creon and the acclaimed oratorio singer Guy de Mey in the key role of the Shepherd.
