I asked Hanna Munitz about NIO's programming policy.

HM -- As Israel's only fully professional opera company, the NIO tries to cater for every taste, to give as wide a coverage as possible, with Italian, German, Russian, and French opera, including 20th century works; and we include Mozart in every season. It has always been our aim to encourage native talent, especially young composers. In our inaugural season at the new Opera House, we presented Josef Tal's Josef, a great work by one of our finest composers of the senior generation, which was very well received. And last year, in the '99-2000 season we premiered Dear Son of Mine by Haim Permont, which, though non-political, dealt with Israeli issues.
