CELESTIAL VOICES

'Medieval music, although so distant from us in time -- it flourished,
very roughly speaking, from around 1000 to 1400 AD -- now makes a
surprisingly lively impact on people in our advanced industrial
technocracies. The furore -- or is it merely a vogue? -- seems to have
been unleashed when around ten years ago the group Gothic Voices issued
a recording of music by Hildegard of Bingen, the abbess, priestess,
poet, composer, philosopher and botanical scientist who, flourishing
through a considerable span of the 12th century, is now sometimes
referred to as the Earliest Great Composer.'

Wilfrid Mellers writes about an early songbook on CD, John Bell Young
listens to Renee Fleming, Roderic Dunnett finds sheer delight in
Hyperion's recording of Harold Fraser-Simpson's operetta 'The Maid of
the Mountains' and Bill Newman continues his exploration of 'BBC
Legends'. Other reviews, mostly with sound samples in Real Audio,
explore the music of Philippe Gaubert, Jan Jarvlepp, Johann Schelle,
George Walker and Handel (as sung by Emma Kirkby).

- MV3 - FRAGMENTS OF FORGOTTEN SOUNDS

'Ancient cities. Ancient cultures. Scattered remnants of lives, of
literatures, of architecture. And so much silence. Our history is made
up of reams of pictorial and literary data and next to nothing for the
ear. It is as if we watched a film but without sound. Yes, we could get
the story, but how much of the character would we lose?'

Today Michele Crider is one the most significant sopranos of the
Italian opera repertoire. The 2001/2002 season offers new highlights.
The debut role as Norma in Gent, Antwerp and Brussels as well as the
new Aida, Il Trovatore and Ernani productions in Cagliari, Catania and
Oviedo look very promising. Everybody who does not have the chance to
attend an opera, where the gifted soprano singer performs, can at least
meet her on her webpage under http://www.michele-crider.com
or by mail: info@michele-crider.com

THE TURN OF THE TIDE

'I flew in to Zagreb with not a little trepidation. Maxwell Davies on
full brazen form can assail the ears, and I had my reservations about
hundreds of eager youngsters pounding home their environmental message
at full blast. This was Zagreb's Lisinski Hall, stage filled to the
gills with 450 Croatian schoolchildren, all fabulously disciplined --
not a note or a flicker out of place.'

Roderic Dunnett reports on a Maxwell Davies European continental
premiere; Malcolm Miller savours Mozart at the Aldeburgh Festival,
listens to American pianist John Robilette and to the Russian-trained
violinist Grigory Zhislin :

EXCITED BY MUSIC

'It's important to have a mixture -- give people something that they
think they want -- a familiar name -- and some nice tunes -- then they
get hopefully a pleasant surprise when they encounter something they
wouldn't otherwise hear. I've had people go to concerts for safe
choices -- the standard works -- and actually come out enjoying the
contemporary piece best, and I think that's great!'

Kathryn Thomas speaks to Keith Bramich about performing contemporary
music, and Bill Newman talks to pianist Moura Lympany :

TREVOR HOLD is that rare bird, a highly acclaimed poet as well as
composer. He began writing music at the age of nine and poetry in his
early teens and ever since then has continued to practise both arts.
Whilst his music has been regularly performed and broadcast, not many
musicians realise that his poetry is regularly published in magazines
and periodicals. 'Chasing the Moon' was recently published:

- SEEKING A PERSPECTIVE

'Very early music to the latest manifestation of a style usually have
examples released on CD within a few months. I, with regular receipt of
up-to-the-minute news of releases or the imminent launching of
something special, struggle to maintain perspective in the face of
publicity blasts of intimidating velocity. Repercussions of
unbelievable naivety sometimes hound the public from billboards to
television campaigns. Gone are the days of normality in advance
publicity.'
