Heinrich von Herzogenberg: Cello Sonatas 1-3. (c) 2000 cpo

Herzogenberg was a disciple of the Brahmsian world, a composer with plenty of talent and fluency. Each of these three cello sonatas journey through the same soundworld, yet there is no shortage of thematic material worked out with skill and some intensity [listen -- track 4, 1:30-2:25].

One might feel sad that every generation produces a voluminous quantity of expertise in every matter that requires it, but the creative faculty so precious and scarce bestows its gift selectively, and its ration of originality can be fulsome or the reverse.

These performances are warm and sensitive enough to fully realise Herzogenberg's ample gifts.
