A traditional approach
The choral music of Bryan Kelly -
reviewed by PATRIC STANDFORD
'... an excellently produced CD, with a fine balance of sound ...'
Bryan Kelly will be 69 next January, and it is high time there was a
noisy celebration of a versatile talent that has been both ebulliently colourful
in those lively orchestral pieces which began to claim our notice forty
years ago with his Latin Quarter Overture, and perhaps the greater
claim of his devout and reflective choral music which first came my way
in the form of his perceptive and beautifully crafted setting of the Stabat
Mater. He is a composer highly sensitive to vocal textures. His harmonic
language, about which there is something pungent and rather French, is that
of a composer who understands choral writing well.
