Technical mastery

BASIL RAMSEY listens to Dohnányi piano music

Dohnányi: Piano Works Vol 2. © 2002 HNH International Ltd

Dohnányi's romantic impulses in music were both of intrinsic quality and impressive. This CD has the services of a pianist who gives proof to this with evident enthusiasm. Nonetheless, I find the music varied in quality with patches below par. It is all written with a technical command that sometimes carries more conviction than the music itself.

I've already found disagreement from others with my opinion, so as always -- the listener will determine his own mind. As long as he listens with musical ears to the ready. Above all, Dohnányi possessed supreme technical mastery, which is winningly demonstrated by Lawrence Schubert [listen -- track 20, 2:47-3:45].
