Mellers at 90Wilfrid Mellers celebrates his ninetieth birthday on Monday. Our weekend of celebration continues tomorrow with Seeing Music Whole - an appreciation by Peter Dickinson, and then on Monday, Keith Bramich visits York to talk to the man himself.

The University of York Department of Music celebrates Mellers' ninetieth birthday with Wilfrid Mellers at 90 - A Celebration, which has a programme devised by Wilfrid himself. The concert takes place on Wednesday 5 May 2004, 7.30pm, at the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, York, UK, as part of the 2004 Spring Festival.

Seven works by Mellers are featured: the String Trio of 1945, Carmina Felium ('Cat Songs') (1952/2003), Rose of May: a threnody for Ophelia (1964), Spells for soprano, flute, viola and percussion (1960), Cloud Canticle for unaccompanied chorus (1969), Chants and Litanies of Carl Sandburg (1961) and A Ballad for Anyone for mixed chorus (1962). New pieces for tenor and prepared piano by John Paynter and Graham Treacher will also be performed. Performances are given by present and past students with surprise appearances by a few of the department's distinguished friends and alumni. Details at www.yorkconcerts.co.uk
