<<  -- 3 --  Robert Anderson    EUPEPTIC VERVE

-------------------------------

It is essential, though, to end with a waltz, and what better than a duet from Lehár's Merry Widow? The two singers, with light and agile voices, have all the charm and panache to make of it a delectable experience [listen -- track 9, 2:37-3:26]. There is so rare a sense of well-being throughout the disc one is tempted to forbid any young conductor from raising a baton in public until he is complete master of this Second Viennese School and its idiom. Peter Guth and his Bruckner players (dear old Anton must be whirling in ecstatic if uncharacteristic 3/4 gyrations along some heavenly bypath) have a eupeptic verve and rhythmic subtlety that are irresistible. Music for an hour is indeed music again, and never more so than by the Blue Danube.
