<<  -- 2 --  Patric Standford    CONSIDERABLE PLEASURE

-------------------------------

In this recital, recorded in 2002 at Länna Church in Sweden, Emma Kirkby is accompanied by Jacob Lindberg, theorbo and archlute, and Lars Ulrik Mortensen, harpsichord, each of whom provide excellent solo performances -- an archlute Sonata by Zamboni, and a Passacaglia by one Bernardo Storace.

The six impressive Amodei vocal pieces include a fine cantata dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, Lieve al piè, grave al passo ('With fleeting foot but solemn tread, lovely, unsullied Galilee ... presses the Hebrew lands'). And there is a lightness that could inspire dancing in their performance -- 'Palestine's horizons ... before the goddess now incline' [listen -- track 12, 1:15-1:57].

Recorded with a warm and resonant acoustic, this is a CD of rare beauty that will be treasured.
