<<  -- 2 --  Patric Standford    IMMENSE VARIETY

-------------------------------

The Society's programme adviser and founding member Neva Pilgrim appears as the soprano soloist in many of the song cycles, among which are Steven Stucky's Sappho Fragments of 1982; Robert Palmer's 1978 settings of Carmina Amoris, also of Sappho; A Poison Tree by Richard Wernick (born 1934), a setting of William Blake; and Dexter Morrill's Six Dark Questions in which her partner is a computer [listen -- CD 5 track 8, 0:00-1:06]!

There is immense variety here. Clearly this is a serious anthology and although not every piece will appeal, each has been selected for its maturity and compositional commitment. Meeting so many composers in such profusion is like meeting people at conferences or parties -- it would be surprising if, after one encounter, one's reactions to such differing personalities would be quite reliable -- or even that every one of them would be clearly remembered -- but the experience would inevitably add some new dimensions and possibly enrichment to any personal musical horizons.

This is a most worthy undertaking, and this CD box set is enthusiastically recommended to any who want to know what music is happening now in New York, and which names should be registered for future prospecting.
