Ernest Ansermet

Ernest Ansermet is remembered especially for his years as director of L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, which he founded in 1918. Born 11 November 1883 in Vernay, Switzerland, his earlier experiences included conducting for Diaghilev's Russian Ballet tours. Particular interest in Stravinsky led to many performances, including premières. He also conducted the first performance of Britten's The Rape of Lucretia. He died on 20 February 1969.
