Frans Brüggen

Dutch baroque flautist, conductor and recorder player Frans Brüggen was born in Amsterdam on 30 October 1934. He studied flute and recorder at what's now the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and musicology at the University of Amsterdam.

At twenty-one he became a professor at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag. He was later a visiting professor at Harvard and at the University of California, Berkeley.

He made his career as a soloist in baroque repertoire, but also co-founded the Orchestra of the 18th Century, and conducted many top European orchestras.

Brüggen died on 13 August 2014, aged seventy-nine.
