Pascal Bentoiu

Romanian modernist composer Pascal Bentoiu ws born on 22 April 1927 and studied with Mihail Jora and Theophil Demetriescu.

He researched the rhythms and harmonies of Romanian folk music at the Bucharest Folklore Institute, and edited Enescu's fourth and fifth symphonies for performance.

He wrote several dramatic operas which use contemporary techniques and folksong, but which also have diatonic qualities. He also wrote instrumental and orchestral works, and his music is characterised by its lyricism and colour.

Pascal Bentoiu died on 21 February 2016, aged eighty-eight.
