PROVOCATIVE THOUGHTS:
The late Patric Standford may have written these short pieces deliberately to provoke our feedback. If so, his success is reflected in the rich range of readers' comments appearing at the foot of most of the pages.
Canadian composer, organist, teacher and administrator Raymond Daveluy was born in Victoriaville, Quebec on 23 December 1926, and initially, in 1937, was a pupil of his father, organist and bandmaster Lucien Daveluy. He studied in Montreal - music theory with Gabriel Cusson and organ with Conrad Letendre and, later, Hugh Giles in New York City.
He wrote mostly organ music, was an impressive improviser, and performed internationally from 1946 through to the 1990s.
From 1960 until 2002 he was in charge of the organ at St Joseph's Oratory in Montreal.
He had important teaching and administrative roles, teaching organ and theory. He was president of the Académie de musique du Québec and director of the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Trois-Rivières. He gave organ courses at McGill University, and sat on the jury of various international organ competitions.
Raymond Daveluy died on 1 September 2016, aged eighty-nine.
