Pavel Egorov

Russian pianist, teacher and scholar Pavel Grigorievich Egorov was born in Leningrad on 8 January 1948. He studied with Tatiana Nikolaeva and Vera Gernostaeva at the Moscow Conservatory, and in 1974 he won the International Schumann Competition in Zwickau. In 1989 he was awarded the Düsseldorf Schumann Prize. He was a People's Artist of the Russian Federation.

He performed widely at an international level, giving of the order of three thousand performances, and also served on the jury of various piano competitions.

He was the scientific editor of the complete collection of Robert Schumann's piano works, in seven volumes, and produced the first Russian urtext publication of J S Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier.

He made a small number of recordings, mostly of Schumann, including a 1997 disc for Sony, and also a disc of Chopin Mazurkas, and some Mozart, Beethoven and Scriabin.  He was also a collector of compact discs, with more than three thousand in his collection, including some with a circulation of only a few dozen copies.

On 8 June 2010, the two-hundredth anniversary of Robert Schumann's birth, Egorov organised a seven-hour marathon concert in St Petersburg, in which various other musicians also participated.

Pavel Egorov was professor and head of the piano department at the St Petersburg Conservatory from 1980 until his death in St Petersburg from cancer on 15 August 2017, aged sixty-nine.
