Leon Goossens

On 12 June 1897 was born the celebrated English oboist Léon Goossens. This family of celebrated musicians also included composer Eugene Goossens and harpists Sidonie Goossens and Marie Goossens. All five children, who grew up in Liverpool, were virtuosi, and although Adolph was killed at a young age in World War I, he was a talented horn player. Léon, as a brilliant player, encouraged many composers to write for the oboe, and played a leading part in focussing attention on its special qualities. He lived until 12 February 1988.
