Richard Gill

Australian conductor and teacher Richard Gill was born in Eastwood, Sydney on 4 November 1941 and began his career as a music teacher. He was the founding conductor of Sydney's Strathfield Symphony Orchestra in 1969, and then studied at the Mozarteum's Orff Institute in Salzburg.

He taught at Sydney Conservatorium of Music (1975-82) and was conductor of the Sydney Youth Orchestra Asssociation (1977-82). He was Dean of the Western Australia Conservatorium of Music (1985-90) and Director of Chorus at Opera Australia (1990-96).

He founded Victorian Opera in 2005 and was its first artistic director. In 2013, with two colleagues, he created the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra.

In 2014 he became musical director of the Sydney Chamber Choir.

Richard Gill died on 28 October 2018, aged seventy-six.
