Egil Hovland

Award-winning Norwegian composer and organist Egil Hovland was born in Råde on 18 October 1924. He studied with Arild Sandvold and Bjarne Brustad at Oslo Conservatory, with Vagn Holmboe in Copenhagen, with Aaron Copland in Tanglewood and with Luigi Dallapiccola in Florence. From 1949 until his death on 5 February 2013 he was organist and choirmaster at Fredrikstad.

Writing in a range of diverse styles, Hovland's output includes two symphonies and an orchestral Lament, a trumpet concerto, Music for ten instruments, Variations for two pianos, a Norwegian Te Deum, Gloria and Magnificat, Bli hos oss ('Stay with us') plus many works for organ.
