German pianist Alfons Kontarsky was born in Iserlohn on 9 October 1932.
He was an instructor at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music, and a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and the Deutscher Musicrat. He was also a professor of music in Cologne, Munich and Salzburg.
He is best known for his performances with his elder brother Aloys Kontarsky as duo-pianists the Kontarskys.
In 1999 he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, first class.
Alfons Kontarsky died on 5 May 2010, aged seventy-seven.
