Louis Lane

American conductor Louis Gardner Lane was born in Eagle Pass on 25 December 1923. He studied composition with Kent Kennan at the University of Texas at Austin, Bohuslav Martinů at Tanglewood and Bernard Rogers at the Eastman School of Music, and opera with Sarah Caldwell.

As apprentice conductor to George Szell with the Cleveland Orchestra, he came into contact with Glenn Gould, who later asked Lane to accompany Gould's Cleveland performances and at the Vancouver Festival.

Lane stayed at the Cleveland Orchestra until 1973, working as pianist and principal keyboard player, assistant conductor, then associate conductor and finally resident conductor, winning two awards for his programming.

He also held positions with the Akron Symphony Orchestra, Lake Erie Opera Theatre, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of the South African Broadcasting Corporation in Johannesburg.

He taught at the University of Akron, the University of Cincinnati, Oberlin College and the University of Texas at Austin.

Louis Lane died at his home in Bratenahl on 15 February 2016, aged ninety-two.
