Born on 20 November 1873 was Daniel Gregory Mason, the American composer who studied with Vincent d'Indy. He was also a teacher, rising to be Professor of Music at Columbia University in 1929. His compositions include three symphonies - the third A Lincoln Symphony and the best known - plus a quantity of chamber music. He also wrote several books. He lived until 4 December 1953.
