Carol Neblett

American soprano Carol Neblett was born in Modesto, California on 1 February 1946. She grew up in Redonto Beach and studied at the University of California in Los Angeles. She made her operatic debut in 1969 as Musetta in La bohème with New York City Opera, and continued to sing a series of roles with this company.

She made the international headlines in 1973 with a brief nude scene in Thaïs for the New Orleans Opera Association. She sang with Pavarotti at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 1976.

She made her New York Metropolitan Opera debut in 1979 as Senta in Der fliegende Holländer, and continued to sing at The Met until 1993. She had a busy international career, appearing in Buenos Aires, Salzburg, Hamburg and London, and also made a series of recordings and TV appearances.

She taught at Chapman University in South Carolina and at the International Lyric Academy in Rome.

Carol Neblett died in Los Angeles on 23 November 2017, aged seventy-one.
