Royston Nash
English-born conductor Royston Nash began his life in Southampton on 23 July 1933, grew up in Bournemouth and studied the trumpet from the age of seven. He studied at the Royal Marines School of Music and at the Royal Academy of Music, with conducting tutors including Rudolf Kempe, Constantin Silvestri and Malcolm Sargent.
His career began as a bandmaster with the Royal Marines, serving in Malta, the Far East, Portsmouth and then becoming director of music at the Royal Marines School of Music in Deal, Kent.
In 1970 he joined the D'Oyly Carte company as assistant musical director, and was musical director there from 1971 until 1979.
He moved to North America in 1979, where, from 1980 until 2007, he was music director of both the Nashua Symphony Orchestra and the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra. He also founded and conducted the Symphony by the Sea, and was conductor of the Cape Ann Symphony Orchestra (1980-86).
Royston Nash died on 4 April 2016, aged eighty-two, in East Sandwich, Massachusetts, USA.
