Hokusai Chamber Orchestra

Based in London, the Hokusai Chamber Orchestra (named after Japanese painter Hokusai Katsushika, 1760-1849, and also known, variously as the Hokusai Orchestra or the International Hokusai Orchestra), was founded in 2010 by Japanese conductor Akiko Ohtomo, and draws (or drew) on the gifts and energies of young professionals from Japan, UK and continental Europe.

In April 2012 the orchestra took part in a high profile memorial concert in London for the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster in Fukushima, featuring music by Shostakovich, Vaughan Williams and Yasushi Akutagawa, plus the first performance of the specially written Shakunage no odori by Keiko Takano.
