The east Asian region of Korea is split into two countries - The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (usually known as North Korea, and aligned with the former Soviet Union since the end of World War II) and the Republic of Korea (generally known as South Korea, and aligned with the United States of America). The term 'Korea' can refer to the region or to either of these countries.
