The American scholar, historian, researcher, teacher, oboist, conductor, composer and pioneer Matthew Peaceman was born in New York on 13 April 1956 to Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany.
He studied at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York and then, to achieve personal justice, he moved to Europe to take festivals of Jewish music to the land from which his family had previously been forced to flee.
His Abyss/Scorched Earth is arguably amongst the greatest works for solo oboe of the twentieth century.
Matthew Peaceman died of cancer on 3 September 2008.
