Peter von Winter

The German opera composer Peter Winter was baptised in Mannheim on 28 August 1754. As a child prodigy, he played violin in the Mannheim court orchestra and went on to study with Salieri in Vienna.

When he became director of the court theatre in Munich, he began writing stage works, including over thirty operas written during between 1778 and 1820. His output also includes twenty-six settings of the mass, plus other sacred music and concertos for wind and orchestra.

Winter died in Munich on 17 October 1825.
