Stephen Yip was born in Hong Kong in 1971 and now lives in Houston, Texas, USA. He has a DMA (2001) from Rice University and a BFA (1996) from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. His teachers included Wing-fai Law, Clarence Mak, Arthur Gottschalk and Ellsworth Milburn.
Yip's works have been performed in the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Israel, Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Germany, Italy, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and the Philippines. He has received several composition prizes, including the Salvatore Martirano Memorial Composition Award, the Taiwan Music Center International Composition Prize, the Singapore International Composition Competition for Chinese Orchestra and the Haifa International Composition Prize. His works have been recorded on the ERM-Media, Parma Recordings, Capstone, North South Recording, Ablaze Records, ATMA Classique and Beauport Classical labels.
Yip is a member of SCI, NACUSA and ASCAP. He currently serves the music faculty at Houston Community College and is a freelance composer.
