Karen Tanaka
Japanese composer Karen Tanaka is to be a Visiting Associate Professor of Music at the University of California, Santa Barbara for this current academic year (2002-3). She'll continue her composition work in addition to teaching. Tanaka (born 1961, Tokyo) studied composition at the Toho Gakuen School of Music with Akira Miyoshi, winning prizes at the Viotti and Trieste competitions, then moved to Paris in 1986 to study with Tristan Murail and work at IRCAM, winning the Gaudeamus Prize in 1987 for her piano concerto Anamorphose. She also studied with Luciano Berio in Florence. Her music is influenced by her love of nature and concern for the environment, and her language, using the latest technology, reflects various aspects of contemporary culture. Forthcoming commissions include a Cello Concerto for Joan Jeanrenaud and two pieces for Japan's NHK Symphony Orchestra.
