Hakuju Hall
At a time of fierce competition between the many concert halls of Tokyo, Japan, Hakuju Hall, a new 300 seat concert venue opening in October 2003 in the crowded Shibuya district of a city known for its capsule hotels, has been designed especially to help audiences to relax. The hall is the brainchild of the Hakuju Institute for Health Science Co Ltd - a health treatment product manufacturer - and 'provides the location to bring the "spirit of comfort" through music' - a slogan typical of the contemporary use of English language in Japan. The comfort is real, however, with low-level orange lighting, cherry tree floors and reclining seats (a world first for a concert hall - the seating capacity reduces to 162 when all seats are reclined). 'An enchanting concert hall, materializing ideal acoustics', thanks to acoustic designer Takayuki Hidaka, who worked in conjunction with interior designers Albert Abut and Sobun Tada. A sky terrace on the ninth floor, above the concert hall, is open to audiences before each concert and during intervals, with panoramic views of Yoyogi Park during the daytime, and of the Shinjuku's high rise buildings at night.
