Piano rolls

At Kunst der Fuge you can now listen to real performances derived from old recordings made through mechanical pianolas (therefore on piano rolls). Recordings were realised by pianists amongst the best in musical history. Performances by great names, such as Rachmaninov, Godowsky, Rubinstein, Paderewsky, Volavy, Horowitz, Cortot, Ornstein, Wittgenstein, Levitski, Hofmann, Moiseiwitsch, Backhaus, Joplin and Roll-Morton are now available.

The transfer into MIDI format has been made possible because of the similarity of piano rolls and MIDI protocol, and made with the help of scans, using handcrafted and original equipment assembled by a few passionate engineers in various parts of the world (reference: Terry Smith, Canada). The transfer of piano rolls into MIDI files allows some of the most remarkable and interesting recordings in music history to be conserved. In this sense the MIDI files are not sequences, or elaborations in MIDI format, but true recordings that were realised on rolls (with the aid of real acoustic pianos).
