Arnold score
Number seven is a huge, apocalyptic work ... For my money it's a blazing masterpiece and it suggests a striking parallel. Here, and elsewhere, we hear the utterly authentic voice of the English Shostakovich. - Piers Burton-Page The original signed 1973 manuscript of Symphony No 7, Op 113, by British composer Malcolm Arnold (1921-2006) is for sale. Anyone interested should contact M&V and we will put you in touch with the person dealing with the sale. The symphony, written mostly at William Walton's home on Ischia, was commissioned by the New Philharmonia Orchestra and first performed in 1974 by this orchestra, with Arnold conducting, at London's Royal Festival Hall. It was published by Faber Music, and plays for forty-five minutes. The three movements are portraits of Arnold's children - Allegro energico (Katherine), Andante con moto - Molto vivace - Lento (Robert) and Allegro - Allegretto - Allegro - Allegretto - Allegro (Edward) - and the symphony was dedicated to them, and the score intended as a gift for them. Unfortunately, Arnold fell out with his children, and, during a period when he was short of money, used the score as payment for some plumbing work! If you don't collect original manuscript scores, but would still like to study this one, printed scores are also available from Faber, for presumably considerably less money.
