On Angel Wings

A unique Christmas concert, 6pm on Saturday 20 December 2014 at St Luke's Church, Chelsea, Sydney Street, London SW3 6NH, UK, features a retelling of Michael Morpurgo's Christmas story On Angel Wings. Performers include Michael Morpurgo, actress Juliet Stevenson and the a cappella group Voice at the Door (Georgina Boyes, Jim Boyes, Barry Coope, Fi Fraser, Jo Freya and Lester Simpson), directed by Simon Reade.

Born in 1943, Michael Morpurgo discovered his talent for 'magical storytelling' whilst working as a teacher. Recurring themes in his work include the First World War, survival and nature. He's possibly best known as author of the 1982 children's novel War Horse, which was adapted as a radio drama, a stage play and a film directed by Steven Spielberg.

On Angel Wings is the story of the adventures of the shepherd boy left behind to tend the sheep whilst the older shepherds visit baby Jesus. It's also an intimate and emotional retelling of the nativity story from an imaginatively different perspective.

A collection at the concert will be taken in aid of Farms for City Children, the charity created by Clare and Michael Morpurgo in the 1970s to offer urban children from all over the UK an opportunity to live and work together for a week at a time on a real countryside farm. The charity runs three farms - Nethercott House, a mixed dairy, beef and sheep farm in Devon, Wick Court, a livestock farm on the River Severn in Gloucestershire, and Lower Treginnis, a Welsh sheep farm on the Pembrokeshire coast.
