McCabe on Naxos
A collection of several significant recordings of the music of John McCabe, none of which has previously appeared on CD, is the Naxos disc of the month for December 2014 (8.571370). The works are Symphony No 1 Elegy, three piano works: Fantasy on a Theme of Liszt, Capriccio and Sostenuto, played by McCabe, and the orchestral work Tuning (which is the only recording featuring McCabe as conductor). Another new CD, Psalm, appeared in November 2014 on Signum Classics (SIGCD403) and includes McCabe's 2012 Trumpet Concerto, Primavera, played by Simon Desbruslais and the Orchestra of the Swan. A McCabe work for double choir, Christ's Nativity, setting Henry Vaughan's poem of the same name, receives its first performance at 7.30pm on Sunday 14 December 2014 at Hallé St Peter's, Manchester, UK, with the Hallé Choir and organist Jonathan Scott conducted by Madeleine Venner. Other scheduled McCabe performances include Two Scenes from 'Edward II' (Joseph Tong and Waka Hasegawa at the Mylor Theatre, Truro College in Cornwall, UK, as part of Truro 3 Arts, 7.30pm on Friday 5 December 2014), Cloudcatcher Fells (Wendover Choral Society and the City of Cambridge Band conducted by Peter Bassano, 7.30pm on Saturday 16 May 2015 at St Mary's Church, High Street, Wendover, Buckinghamshire, UK) and Upon entering a painting (Joseph Tong and Waka Hasegawa at the 2015 Presteigne Festival, Powys, UK, 1pm on Saturday 29 August 2015). This good news is very welcome for McCabe, who is battling against an aggressive brain tumour, whilst still continuing to compose.
