Stefan Arzberger

Stefan Arzberger, the forty-one-year-old leader of the Leipzig String Quartet, is facing a strange court case in New York City, accused of assault, attempted murder, burglary and strangulation. Arzberger claims that he has no recollection of the attack on a woman in a New York City hotel on 27 March 2015, whilst on tour, and his lawyers are claiming that he had been drugged by a male prostitute.

The Leipzig Quartet has been severely affected by the events of 27 March, and although Arzberger's fellow musicians have managed to find replacement violinists for their engagements, some engagements have already been cancelled. In spite of this, they and many other musician colleagues (including conductors Kurt Masur and Herbert Blomstedt) continue to support him, believing that the accused actions are completely out of character, and that he was drugged and robbed.
