Renaud Capuçon

As he celebrates his fortieth birthday, French violinist Renaud Capuçon renews his long-term relationship with Erato, the label he has been recording with for the last sixteen years.

Since the beginning of his career, Renaud Capuçon has been loyal to his record company. During the Mozartwoche in Salzburg, on 27 January 2016 - the day he turned forty - Renaud Capuçon played Dutilleux's concerto for violin l'Arbre des songes with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and under the direction of Tugan Sokhiev. The following day, in the presence of Alain Lanceron, President of Warner Classics and Erato, the award-winning violinist renewed his contract with the Erato label.

Renaud Capuçon exudes a youthful air, but, now firmly established as one of the world's leading violinists, he celebrated his fortieth birthday with the release of the best-known works of three composers - Edouard Lalo, Pablo de Sarasate and Max Bruch. Capuçon made the recordings with Paavo Järvi and the Orchestre de Paris at the orchestra's new home, the French capital's Philharmonie, which opened in early 2015 and was immediately hailed for its superb acoustics. The Bruch concerto became the first piece to be recorded there, in May 2015.

The Lalo/Bruch/Sarasate album has only just been released, but another record is in the making. This album will be available in Autumn 2016, and will include three concertos dedicated to Renaud Capuçon himself. These were recorded live the first time they were performed: Bruno Mantovani's concerto with the Opéra national de Paris, Wolfgang Rihm's, with the Wiener Symphoniker, both under the direction of Philippe Jordan, and Pascal Dusapin's, with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under the direction of Myung-Whun Chung.

'As I celebrate my fortieth birthday, I am looking forward to upcoming projects and delighted to renew this long-term contract with Warner Classics that started sixteen years ago!' - Renaud Capuçon in Salzburg on 27 January 2016

Firmly established as a major soloist, recitalist and chamber musician, working with the top international orchestras and conductors and performing in the most prestigious venues, Renaud Capuçon was born at Chambéry in 1976. He began his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris at the age of fourteen, winning numerous awards during his five years there. Following this, he moved to Berlin to study with Thomas Brandis and Isaac Stern, and was awarded the Prize of the Berlin Academy of Arts. In 1997, he was invited by Claudio Abbado to become concertmaster of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, which he led for three summers, working with conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Seiji Ozawa, Daniel Barenboim, Franz Welser-Möst and Abbado himself.

Since then, Capuçon has established himself as a soloist at the very highest level. He has played concerti with orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker under Haitink and Robertson, the Boston Symphony under Dohnanyi, the Orchestre de Paris under Eschenbach and Paavo Järvi, Philharmonique de Radio France and Filarmonica della Scala orchestras with Chung, Orchestre National de France and Gatti, and the Simon Bolivar Orchestra with Dudamel.

Capuçon has a great commitment to chamber music and has worked with Argerich, Barenboim, Bronfman, Buniatishvili, Grimaud, Pires, Pletnev, Repin, Bashmet and Mørk, as well as with his brother, cellist Gautier Capuçon. These collaborations have taken him, among others, to the festivals of Edinburgh, Berlin, Lucerne, Verbier, Aix-en-Provence, Roque d'Anthéron, San Sebastian, Stresa, Tanglewood and Salzburg.

Recording exclusively with Erato (previously known as EMI/Virgin Classics), Capuçon has built an extensive discography. Recent releases include Bach and Vasks concertos as conductor and soloist with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and Brahms and Berg Concertos with the Wiener Philharmoniker under Daniel Harding. His latest chamber music recording is a disc of Frank, Grieg and Dvořák sonatas with Khatia Buniatishvili. His recording of Fauré's complete chamber music for strings with Nicholas Angelich, Gautier Capuçon, Michel Dalberto, Gérard Caussé and Ebène Quartet won the Echo Klassik Prize for chamber music in 2012.

Renaud Capuçon plays the Guarneri del Gesù 'Panette' (1737) that belonged to Isaac Stern, bought for him by the Banca Svizzera Italiana (BSI). In June 2011 he was appointed 'Chevalier dans l'Ordre National du Mérite' by the French Government. He is the Artistic Director of the Easter Festival in Aix-en-Provence which he founded in 2013, and he was recently appointed Artistic Director of the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad.
