'... the performances suffer from a worrying anemia ...'

Schumann: String Quartet Op 41 No 3; Piano Quintet Op 44. Takács Quartet; Marc-André Hamelin. © 2009 Hyperion Records Ltd

I was brought up on Robert Schumann's Quintet with Artur Schnabel (1882-1951) and the original Pro Arte String Quartet comprising Alphonse Onnou, leader, Laurent Halleux, second violin, Germain Prévost, viola, and Robert Maas, cello.

Furthermore; though Schumann's quintessential Quintet is liberally represented in CD catalogues, the brilliant account (above), recorded in 1934 and issued as four HMV 78s, DB 2387-2390, remains vivid in my memory.

Even now the His Master's Voice sound is splendid and very clear; like one of those incomparable 'Walter Legge' mid fifties recordings....
