How often do you get to hear more than one horn trio in a single evening? Alec Frank-Gemmill, Florence Cooke and Daniel Tong played no less than three (Derby Chamber Music, Multi-Faith Centre, Derby University, Derby, UK, 5 March 2010), beginning with Lennox Berkeley's Trio, written for Denis Brain. Anyone who plays Lennox Berkeley gets brownie points in my book, but this was a beautifully turned performance combining muscularity and elegance, passion and thoughtfulness, with the concluding set of variations sharply characterised...
