A double bill from Los Angeles Opera
impresses MARIA NOCKIN

 

It was a spring weekend in Los Angeles and the cool breezes were blowing through the many coloured flowering trees. On both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, the music centre was flooded with tourists and opera goers enjoying the plaza before the show. Saturday night brought out long gowns and stiletto heels for the Western Hemisphere première of Franz Schreker's The Stigmatized ('Die Gezeichneten'). Many of the same people returned looking a little less formal for Sunday's second performance of the final opera of Richard Wagner's Ring: Götterdämmerung.

We all know a great deal about Wagner (1813-1883), but Schreker (1878-1934) is a new name to most American opera goers...
