Mahler versus Mahler

Gustav Mahler was born 150 years ago and died 99 years ago. Thus, in 2010 and 2011 there is a double anniversary. This implies that, all over the world, many symphony orchestras are planning to play Mahler's opera omnia which is less extensive than generally believed: nine symphonies, the sketches of a tenth unfinished symphony and 43 lieder -- a comparatively small number when compared with the production of Wolf, Schubert, Schumann and Brahms.

In Rome, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia started the celebration with a concert (the Second Symphony) on 8-11 May 2010, and will proceed throughout 2011. All the nine symphonies will be performed, but not the unfinished Tenth...
