Terrific Pace and Direction

Verdi's 'Luisa Miller'
at the Buxton Festival,
recommended by MIKE WHEELER

Verdi's Luisa Miller tends to be relegated to the shadows from which the composer was to emerge in the mature scores of the early 1850s -- Rigoletto, La Traviata and Il Trovatore. This Buxton Festival production is having none of it (Buxton Opera House, Buxton, Derbyshire, UK, 7 July 2010). Verdi and his librettist may have watered down the political implications of Schiller's original play, Kabale und Liebe ('Intrigue and Love'), but director Stephen Medcalf does his best to put them back again...
