A Bernstein double bill at Buxton,
reviewed by MIKE WHEELER

 

Trouble in Tahiti, Leonard Bernstein's first attempt at writing the great American opera, is a snappy one-acter looking underneath the American dream at the tensions and heartache of a marriage coming apart (Buxton Festival, Buxton Opera House, Buxton, Derbyshire, UK, 15 July 2010). A close-harmony trio comments using parodies of various popular styles. Their recurring opening number, on the never-had-it-so-good delights of suburban life, is starkly undercut by the frosty atmosphere around Sam and Dinah's breakfast table...
