Fine Performances

MIKE WHEELER listens to
James Rippingale, Jonathan Trout
and the Derby Concert Orchestra

A last-minute hitch in the arrangements meant that Derby Concert Orchestra had to decamp at short notice from their usual autumn venue, St Peter's Church Littleover, Derby, about a mile down the road to Derby Grammar School for this concert (Derby, UK, 16 October, 2010).

The school hall's dry, unforgiving and bass-heavy acoustic did the orchestra no favours where tone and balance were concerned, in what were otherwise fine performances.

The fiery energy they and conductor Jonathan Trout brought to Mozart's Don Giovanni overture also stood them in good stead for a powerful account of Beethoven's Eroica Symphony...
