Ensemble

Highly Effective

Bax, Chopin and Prokofiev from
Artur Pizarro, Mark Elder and the Hallé Orchestra,
heard by MIKE WHEELER

Two weeks or so after opening Derby's new concert series, the Hallé Orchestra and Mark Elder were at Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall, (Nottingham, UK, 7 October 2010) to launch their orchestral season. Bax, Chopin and Prokofiev may not be an obvious piece of programming, but it turned out to be a highly effective study in contrasts.

A passionate performance of Bax's Tintagel found an ideal balance of clarity and richness, with the horns, in particular, seizing their moments to ring out over the rest of the texture...
