Quite Breathtaking

Well-Tempered Clavier -

'... lots to admire ...'

Johann Sebastian Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier Book I. David Korivaar. © 2007 MSR Classics

David Korevaar's forthright, if somewhat businesslike account of the Well-Tempered Clavier has much to recommend it. However, to make Korevaar one's choice, the listener must accept from the outset that this MSR recording is periodically awash in a sea of resonance.

In some preludes and fugues the opulence is less apparent and not overly distracting. In others I found myself drowning in the aural surf.

Korevaar's performance is shaped with scrupulous discipline and in recurring instances he displays a beauty of line which is quite breathtaking...
