The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra was in blistering form for this mainly American programme, conducted by Carlos Kalmar (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 2 March 2011).

John Adams' The Chairman Dances was a timely follow-up to the relay of Nixon in China from the New York Met two weeks earlier. The players made the score glisten, while suggesting a violent undercurrent beneath the chic exterior in the central episode...
