MIKE WHEELER listens to
Strauss, Rimsky-Korsakov and Khachaturian
from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

 

Two colourful pieces of orchestral story-telling formed the main part of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's programme with their Principal Conductor, Kirill Karabits (Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, UK, 31 March 2011).

Strauss's Don Quixote got off to a gentle start, and tempi throughout were occasionally on the slow side. While the playing was on a consistently high level, the performance didn't really bring out the work's humorous side...
