Gounod's 'Faust' at San Diego Opera

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote of Faust and Marguerite in his Faust Part One which was published in German in 1808. Twenty years later, it appeared in a French translation by Gerard de Nerval. Charles Gounod was interested in it and he composed a setting of its Church Scene in the late 1840s. In 1850, France first saw Michel Carré's romantic play Faust et Marguerite in which the roles of Valentin and Siébel differed significantly from the original Goethe. It ended differently, too...
