Verdi's 'Il Trovatore' from
New York Metropolitan Opera in HD,
reviewed by MARIA NOCKIN

The libretto of Giuseppe Verdi's opera, Il Trovatore, is based on a Spanish play by dramatist Antonio García Gutiérrez (1813-1884). García Gutiérrez, a native of Chiclana de la Frontera in the province of Cadiz, quit medical school at the age of twenty-three and moved to Madrid in hopes of becoming a playwright. At first, he was only able to find work as a journalist for La Revista Española and earn some extra money translating French plays by Eugène Scribe and Alexandre Dumas, père, into Spanish. His financial situation in the capital city was so miserable that he thought seriously of joining the army.

Luckily, he was still able to get out of his military commitment when his romantic drama, El Trovador, was accepted for presentation at Madrid's Teatro del Principe...
